How to Create Strong Passwords You Can Actually Manage
Most password advice people absorbed over the years — mandatory symbols, a capital letter, change it every 90 days — is outdated, and some of it actively makes passwords weaker by pushing people toward predictable patterns like "Summer2026!". Modern guidance, including from NIST, is simpler: make passwords long, make them unique per site, and let software remember them.
How Passwords Actually Get Cracked
Attackers rarely guess passwords one by one at a login screen. The real threats are breached databases (attackers crack millions of leaked password hashes offline at billions of guesses per second), credential stuffing (trying your leaked email-and-password pair on every other popular site), and phishing. This explains the two rules that matter most: length, because each added character multiplies the offline cracking effort; and uniqueness, because a password reused across sites is only as safe as the least secure site that stores it.
Length Beats Cleverness
A truly random 8-character password with symbols falls to modern offline cracking hardware in hours; a random 16-character one holds out for longer than the universe has existed. The math is that stark. Human substitutions do not help nearly as much as people think — cracking tools try "p@ssw0rd"-style variations first, precisely because humans love them. If you need a password you can memorize, a passphrase of four to five random common words ("correct-horse-battery-staple" style) delivers strong entropy while staying typeable. The key word is random: words you picked because they mean something to you are guessable; words a generator picked are not.
A System That Works in Real Life
Nobody can memorize sixty unique strong passwords, and you should not try. Use a password manager — the one built into your browser or phone is far better than reuse — and let it generate and store a random password for every account. You then need to actually remember only one strong master passphrase. What Matters Beyond the Password
Turn on two-factor authentication for anything important — email above all, since email resets every other account. An authenticator app or hardware key is stronger than SMS codes. Ignore forced periodic password changes unless a breach is suspected; rotating passwords on a schedule mainly produces weaker, pattern-based passwords. And treat "security questions" as passwords too: the honest answer to "mother's maiden name" is often public information, so store a random answer in your password manager instead.
